Poster Artist Loves Mix of Houses and People in OHBy Anne Rodier – Morton Ave.
Shawn Price grew up across the river, but kept moving closer to theHighlands until she landed on Morton Ave. The middle girl of three, she spent much time quietly observing the world around her, taking note of things out of the ordinary. “That’s what is so great about this neighborhood,” Shawn explained. “I love the mix of houses here in the Original Highlands. They don’t always seem to fit together, but they do. Just like the people. There is such a mix that appears random, but all are accepted, all fit together.”By day, Shawn works for an advertising and software company, but her true passion is photography. She is currently being mentored by Marty Pearl, her domestic partner and owner of MartyPearl.com photography. A freelance photographer, he is known for his photojournalism and wild life and nature work. Their studio holds many city contracts and is fully credentialed for the Derby Festival and Churchill Downs. “We really like to look for things that are not commercial, standard shots, but as a team, we catch both sides of the story,” Shawn grinned.Shawn’s inspiration for the poster is easy, she said, “The Highlands is where everyone wants to go to eat, play, shop and live.” She used the pictures from the abandoned landmarks initiative and created a random mosaic as the poster background. Then she applied a green filter, “Because everything is so green that time of year when we have the festival. And, of course, there are fleur de lis because this is Louisville.”The poster will be available sometime before the festival – as soon as all of the sponsor and entertainer information is finalized. The 2008 Original Highlands Festival poster will definitely show off the wonderful mix of everything that we have in this neighborhood.
